Aims:
 • Increase financial literacy for 16 -19 students.
 • Provide students and parents with relevant and current knowledge on financial structures in HE.
 • Equip students who are progressing to HE with the budgeting and money management skills to successfully manage the transition.

Planned activities for 2004/05

Introduction to Money Management
These two workshops aim to develop basic financial literacy and confidence through the development of budgeting skills. These workshops are for 16-19 students in the first year of their studies. The themes of the two sessions are:
 1. Managing your income - P/T jobs, EMA.
 2. Bank accounts and budgeting.

HE Finance for students
These workshops were run at Westminster Kingsway College during the pilot in 2003/04 and were aimed at students on level 3 courses who were applying for HE. They will be run again this year using the material developed by Face-2-Face with Finance. These workshops had three man elements:
 • The reasons why students need a bank account and a review of the financial services of banks.
 • Analysis of a real student budget followed by a discussion on how to deal with the financial issues;
 • Suggestions relating to identifying appropriate undergraduate bank account and financial services.

HE Finance for Parents With the aims of raising awareness of the financial issues around progression to Higher education and allaying some of the fears that exist around this issue the following activities are planned:

 • Leaflet at Parents/Carers Evening (yr 12)
Covering key financial issues around progression to higher education, further sources of financial information and benefits of higher education.
 • Short Talks
Rolling programme of short talks on financial issues around progression to higher education to be carried out at the Year 13 Higher Education Convention. The talk will be supported by detailed written information.

Staff Training
Training tutors, teaching and welfare staff to deliver the "HE Finance for Students" and "Introduction to Money Management" workshops for students. Welfare staff training would take place in Autumn and teaching staff in the summer. Plan to offer training to 200 staff.

Next steps
 • An evaluation of these materials and activities will be available on this web site in summer 2005.
 • It is proposed that the materials for running these sessions and training the welfare and teaching staff are put together in a financial literacy pack and made available to other FE colleges.
