Case Study - Medical Physics (Queen Mary University)

Queen Mary University of London and City & Islington Sixth Form College

Staff from the medical engineering department at Queen Mary University of London are collaborating with City and Islington Sixth Form College and supporting them with the delivery of part of the Salters A-Level Physics syllabus.

This syllabus includes an optional unit on Medical Physics called Spare Part Surgery. The content of this unit overlaps with aspects of Medical Engineering at QMUL and staff from QMUL are delivering the relevant material from Medical Engineering to year 12 A level physics students.

This would cover the requirements for the Medical Physics unit and integrate the experience of studying physical science at higher education level. There will also be practical activities based at QMUL using their specialised facilities.

Planning the delivery of the module will involve staff from both institutions. Benefits for FE staff include updating of curriculum knowledge and gaining a greater understanding of current physical science degree courses. Benefits for HE staff include gaining a greater understanding of the A Level Physics curriculum and of the learning needs of students progressing to HE.
