HE:FE Interface Project - Medical Physics

Staff from the medical engineering department at Queen Mary University of London are collaborating with City and Islington Sixth Form College, supporting the college with the delivery of part of the Salters A-Level Physics syllabus.

This syllabus includes an optional unit on Medical Physics called Spare Part Surgery. The content of this unit overlaps with aspects of Medical Engineering at QMUL, and staff from QMUL are delivering the relevant material from Medical Engineering to year 12 A level physics students.

This covers the A level Medical Physics syllabus, and gives college students the experience of studying physical science at higher education level. As part of the programme, college students will undertake practical activities at QMUL using their specialised medical physics equipment.

Planning the delivery of the module will involve staff from both institutions.

Benefits for FE staff include updating of curriculum knowledge and gaining a greater understanding of current physical science degree courses.

Benefits for HE staff include gaining a greater understanding of the A Level Physics curriculum and of the learning needs of students progressing to HE.

Time scale

2 days in March 2005

Target students

A level Physics students (2nd year) studying the Salters A Level Physics.

Target staff

A Level Physics teaching staff in the college and university medical physics lecturers.
